In Detail

Each Document Explained

What the consulate is actually checking, and how to make each document bulletproof.

Document 1

Valid Passport

See details

Your passport must have at least 3 months validity beyond your planned return date and contain 2 blank pages for the visa sticker. It must have been issued within the last 10 years (Schengen rule, even if the printed expiry is later).

Common mistake Applicants with passports issued more than 10 years ago are routinely refused even when the expiry shows valid. Renew before applying.
Document 2

Schengen Application Form

See details

Complete the official Schengen visa application form from the destination consulate website. Sign by hand. Dates must match your flights and accommodation.

Common mistake Filling the form digitally without printing and signing. Most consulates require a physical signature on the printed form.
Document 3

Biometric Photos

See details

Two recent photos sized 35 by 45 mm on white background, taken within 6 months. ICAO compliant: neutral expression, no glasses, no head covering (except religious), hair off forehead, ears visible.

Common mistake Selfies, glasses, or smile. Pharmacy photo booths in the UK (Boots, Snappy Snaps) are reliable for Schengen specs.
Document 4

Travel Insurance

See details

Minimum 30,000 EUR medical coverage, valid across all 27 Schengen countries and the full duration of your trip plus 1 day. Must include repatriation in case of death or serious illness.

Common mistake UK-only or country-specific policy. Buy a Schengen-wide policy from AXA, Allianz, World Nomads, or similar. Confirm the policy document explicitly says "Schengen" and "repatriation."
Document 5

Flight Itinerary

See details

A round-trip flight booking confirmation. A reservation (without payment) is not enough for most consulates. Dates must align exactly with your accommodation and cover letter.

Common mistake Submitting a one-way booking expecting to buy the return later. Consulates view this as weak return intent and refuse.
Document 6

Accommodation Proof

See details

Hotel booking confirmation, Airbnb reservation, or invitation letter from your host. Must cover every night of your stay.

Common mistake Booking refundable hotels and cancelling after visa approval. Consulates can verify bookings. Use prepaid or non-refundable reservations.
Document 7

Financial Proof

See details

3 to 6 months of UK bank statements, plus a current employment letter and recent payslips. Consulates typically expect 50 to 100 GBP per day of stay as available funds.

Common mistake A recently topped-up balance with no transaction history. Statements should be stamped or signed by the bank. Print directly from online banking with the bank logo visible.
Document 8

UK Immigration Status (eVisa Share Code)

See details

From 25 February 2026, UK eVisa share codes are the only valid proof of UK immigration status for non-British citizens applying for a Schengen visa. Generate a 9 character code from your UKVI account at gov.uk/evisa (valid 90 days).

Common mistake Using a BRP card (no longer accepted, expired 31 December 2024) or providing a share code older than 90 days. Detailed walkthrough below.
Document 9

Cover Letter

See details

A one-page letter stating your travel purpose, dates, full itinerary, source of funds, employment in the UK, and reason for returning. Address it to the consulate of your destination country.

Common mistake Generic templated language. Make it specific: name your employer, mention your UK address tenure, and describe your concrete plans in each city.
Document 10

Day-by-Day Itinerary

See details

A schedule showing every day of your trip: city, accommodation, planned activities, internal transport. Multi-country trips must clarify which country you spend the most nights in (the country of first entry, where you apply).

Common mistake Listing cities without dates or with conflicting dates. Use a simple table: date, city, accommodation, activity, transport.

UK Specific · Critical Update

eVisa Share Code: The 2026 Replacement for BRP Cards

The UK fully migrated to a digital-only eVisa system on 25 February 2026. Physical BRP cards expired 31 December 2024 and are no longer accepted by VFS Global or TLScontact for Schengen applications. You must generate a share code from your UKVI account.

1

Sign in to UKVI account

Visit gov.uk/evisa and sign in (or create one if you have not yet linked your eVisa).

2

Select share code type

For Schengen applications, generate a "Prove your status to someone in the UK or abroad" code.

3

Save the 9 character code

The code is valid for 90 days, reusable within that window. Note it and screenshot the screen.

4

Present at VFS or TLScontact

Provide the code plus a screenshot at your appointment. Some consulates also accept the share link.

Generate the code 1 to 2 weeks before your appointment, not months ahead, because it expires after 90 days. If your passport was renewed after linking your eVisa, update the UKVI account first or the code will be rejected.

VFS Global vs TLScontact UK

UK Schengen applications route through one of two centres depending on destination country.

VFS Global UK

Avoid the Pitfalls

7 Most Common Rejection Reasons

The global Schengen refusal rate was 14.8% in 2024 (1.7 million of 11.7 million applications). These are the recurring themes UK applicants hit.

1

Unclear travel purpose

Vague cover letter or itinerary that does not specify what you will do each day. Consulates need concrete plans.

2

Insufficient or unstable financial proof

Below the 50 to 100 GBP per day threshold, or a recently topped-up balance with no transaction history.

3

Weak ties to the UK

Short job tenure, no proof of UK address, no clear return motivation. Strong ties make consulates confident you will return.

4

Non-compliant travel insurance

Below 30,000 EUR coverage, excludes a Schengen country, dates do not match the visa period, or repatriation clause missing.

5

Incomplete documentation

Missing one of the 10 documents above. Missing an eVisa share code is now a common 2026 cause.

6

Employment verification gaps

No employer letter, recently started job, employment gap in last 12 months without explanation.

7

Forged or inconsistent documents

Dates that do not match across flight, hotel, and cover letter. Even unintentional inconsistencies trigger suspicion.

2024 Refusal Rate Reference The highest rejection rates in 2024 were Malta (38.5 percent), Estonia (27.2 percent), Belgium (24.6 percent), Slovenia (24.5 percent), and Sweden (24.0 percent). France, Italy, and Spain rejection rates remained in the 10 to 18 percent range for UK applicants. Source: European Commission Visa Statistics 2024
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a BRP card for Schengen applications from the UK?

No. UK BRP cards expired on 31 December 2024 and are no longer accepted. From 25 February 2026, the UK is fully digital and only the eVisa share code is valid proof of UK immigration status for Schengen visa applications.

How early should I apply for a Schengen visa from the UK in 2026?

Apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before travel for off-peak periods. For summer (July, August) and Christmas, apply 8 to 10 weeks ahead. Many consulates accept applications up to 6 months in advance.

Which Schengen country has the highest approval rate for UK applicants?

Lithuania and Switzerland consistently have the highest approval rates for UK applicants, both above 90 percent. France, Italy, and Germany are mid-range at 85 to 90 percent. Malta and Belgium have the lowest approval rates globally.

Can I apply for a Schengen visa to multiple countries on one trip?

Yes. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are split evenly, apply to the country of first entry. The visa is valid for all 27 Schengen countries.

What if my eVisa share code expires before my appointment?

Generate a new code. They are reusable within 90 days but expire after that. Plan to generate the code 1 to 2 weeks before your appointment, not months ahead.

How does Visard help with documents?

Visard does not handle documents (you submit them yourself at VFS or TLScontact). Visard monitors visa centres every 3 seconds and alerts you in Telegram the moment a slot opens. Combined with prepared documents, this is the fastest path to a confirmed appointment.

Where can I check the latest VFS Global or TLScontact UK requirements?

Always cross-reference with the destination country consulate page on gov.uk and the visa centre official site. Requirements can change between consulates and over time. This page is updated regularly but should be used alongside official sources.
