Which countries take Schengen applications in Edinburgh
The table lists destinations whose official page names Edinburgh as an application centre, checked on 8 October 2026. If your destination is not in the table, check its official visa page before you book: a centre that serves one country does not automatically serve another.
| Destination | Booking system | Edinburgh | Other UK centres named by the official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austria | VFS Global | Yes | London, Manchester |
| Denmark | VFS Global | Yes | London, Manchester |
| France | TLScontact | Yes | London, Manchester |
| Greece | GVCworld | Yes | London, Manchester |
| Italy | VFS Global | Yes, for applicants in Scotland and Northern Ireland | London |
| Netherlands | VFS Global | Yes | Birmingham, London, Manchester |
| Norway | VFS Global | Yes | London |
| Portugal | VFS Global | Yes | London, Manchester |
| Spain | BLS International | Yes, by where you live (see below) | London, Manchester |
| Sweden | VFS Global | Yes | London |
| Switzerland | VFS Global | Yes | London, Manchester |
| Germany | TLScontact | No | London, Manchester |

Germany is the one to watch for. Its applications from the UK go only through London and Manchester, so an Edinburgh appointment is not an option for a German visa.
Where the Edinburgh centres are
Several VFS Global destinations share one building: the joint visa application centre at 1 Rennie's Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT. Norway calls it the Joint Visa Application Centre in Edinburgh, and the Portugal and Austria pages on VFS Global give the same address.
Opening hours differ by destination even inside the same building. On VFS Global's Portugal page, documents are accepted Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 12:00. On the Austria page, the centre is open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:30, with passport collection from 13:00 to 14:00. VFS Global notes that there is no car park at the Edinburgh centre.
Spain's Edinburgh centre is run by BLS International and has its own booking site. Greece's centres are run by GVCworld. France's Edinburgh centre is one of three run by TLScontact.
Who can apply in Edinburgh
For most destinations, living anywhere in the UK is enough: the Netherlands says you can apply at any of its four UK centres if you live in the UK, and France says UK residents can apply at any of its three centres because there is no consular area.
Two destinations decide the centre by where you live.
- Italy. The Italian Consulate General in Edinburgh says all visa services in the UK are offered by the Consulate General in London, and that applicants in Scotland and Northern Ireland book their appointments at the visa centre in Edinburgh.
- Spain. BLS International asks you to choose the county you live in, and says an application from outside the consulate's area will not be accepted. On BLS's own list, Edinburgh serves Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and the Teesside areas (Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Stockton-on-Tees and Cleveland).
What Edinburgh changes about timing
Applying in Edinburgh can add travel time between the centre and the embassy, and some embassies count it separately. Denmark's embassy, for example, says transport between VFS and the embassy is not included in its processing time and adds two days each way for Edinburgh, against one day each way for London.
The Visa Code sets the decision period itself at 15 calendar days from an admissible application, extendable to 45 in individual cases (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, Article 23). Book early enough that transport and processing both fit before your trip.
How to get an Edinburgh appointment when the calendar is empty
- Confirm that your destination offers Edinburgh, using the table above or the official page.
- Check whether London or Manchester is also open to you for the same destination.
- Have your documents and the online form ready before you look for a date.
- Set an alert for your destination and centre, and open the booking page as soon as it arrives.
A Schengen visa bot such as Visard watches the VFS Global and BLS booking calendars of the destinations it covers every 3 seconds. In the Telegram bot you choose the destination, the centre and the visa type, and the bot lists only the centres it checks for that route. When a date appears, the alert arrives within a second.
Notifications cost £35 for one destination or £65 for all covered UK destinations, for 31 days with no automatic renewal. France and Germany are not currently covered by Visard from the UK. For the wider picture of Schengen visa appointments in the UK, including which destinations Visard covers, see the UK page.
Edinburgh, London or Manchester
If your destination offers more than one city, the choice is about travel and timing, not about the visa itself: the application is decided by the same embassy whichever centre you use. London has the most destinations. Edinburgh saves Scottish applicants the trip south, and for Spain and Italy it is the centre that applicants in Scotland and Northern Ireland are directed to.
For London-specific advice, read the guide to a Schengen visa appointment in London. If no centre shows dates, the action plan for when no appointments are showing covers the next steps.
