An empty calendar usually does not mean there are no appointments. It means the last ones released were taken before you looked. Dates are released without a schedule and are usually gone within minutes. This plan goes through what actually gets people a date, in order.

1. Why the calendar is empty: a timing problem, not a supply problem

Visa centres do not drip appointments out evenly. Dates appear at irregular times, and on a busy route a new date is booked within a minute. If you look at 3 pm you see an empty calendar and conclude there is nothing; what you are seeing is the gap between releases. The people who get appointments are usually the ones who were told the moment one appeared.

2. Check all three systems, and know which one your destination uses

From the UK, Schengen appointments run on three separate systems, each with its own calendar and account. If you have been checking the wrong site, the calendar was never going to fill.

3. Check Manchester and Edinburgh, not only London

Most destinations are served from more than one UK city and availability is not synchronised between them. Centres are assigned by where you live, so check the destination's jurisdiction page before booking a date in another city; a booking outside your region is usually refused at the desk.

4. When slots are released: what our monitoring shows

None of the three systems publishes a release schedule, and none releases at one fixed time of day. You must apply to the country where you will spend the most nights; if nights are equal, the country you enter first. 7. Have every document ready before the alert

A date lasts about a minute once it appears. Fill in the online form now so the booking step is only picking the date.

8. Premium appointment or a slot alert: which gets you a date sooner?

9. Waitlists and cancellation slots

Cancelled appointments go back into the calendar as single dates, often at short notice, and are the most common way an "earlier slot" appears. If you already hold a far-off date, keep it and keep watching for a cancellation.

• Documents not ready, so the minute passes while you look for the insurance PDF.
• Two people on the same account at the same time, which locks the session.
• A browser extension or ad blocker breaking the booking page (technical issues on VFS websites).
• Watching only London.

15. How far ahead can you book, and when to start

You can apply up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 working days before; most consulates take 15 calendar days to decide, longer in summer. Start looking 3 months out on busy routes. If you are inside 6 weeks, set an alert today rather than hoping the calendar improves.
